Title: Proud New Owner of Scorpio Cosworth!
Post by BlueQ on Apr 4th, 2008, 12:13am
Hi all

Less than a week ago I bought THIS (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170203983571&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D170203983571%26fvi%3D1) 1998 Ford Scorpio Ultima 2.9 24V Cosworth on Ebay.  Item #170203983571.

I have read lots of information on this incredibly useful site both before and after buying the car.

It's a fab car and I am rapidly growing to love it.  Everything appears to be working correctly.  :D

I have booked it into a garage to have a few issues investigated next week: an oil leak from the diff (is this common / expensive?) and new Pirelli tyres for the front, as the current ones are worn down on the inside.  I am expecting a bill for repair work to correct the problem of this uneven tyre wear.  Also, the car has a vibration between 72-80 MPH / 115-130 km/h.  I expect this vibration to be related to the tyre problem (any ideas?).  Hopefully will be sorted out next week.

Final problem is a smell from the air vents.  I think the smell is coolant.  It only happens when the CC is set to blow warm air into the car.  If the temp is set to "LO" there is no smell.  If the fan is set to 'off' there is no smell.  With the temp set to "LO" and the A/C on the air is super cold with no smell.  So I can only assume that it is coming from the heater core when the CC calls for heat and the door to the matrix is open.  I have ordered a bottle of Kalimex K-Seal and I'm hoping this will do the trick (your thoughts?).

The engine sounds good with no rattles.  The tranny is smooth and the fluid red and clean.  I will get round to cleaning the MAF, although the powertrain is working great at the moment -- smooth and powerful at all times.  :)

I have it booked in for an A/C service tomorrow as I can't see any previous invoices for the A/C.

Does anyone know what the mysterious button is for above the traction control and heated seat buttons?  I've tried pressing it but nothing seems to happen!

I'm looking forward to life with my Scorp!  And I know this site is going to be invaluable!

Mark

Welcome to the site  :)

The button above the traction control is to switch the rear windows off so you can't open them from the back buttons.....child safety  ;)

Coolant smell may well indicate a leaky heater matrix. Does it blow hot when temp is set to high ?.....if not then the matrix may be blocked as well.

The diff leaking means the diff pinion seal may need replacing. If it's just a small leak (like mine has) then the oil it sprays around will stop the chassis from rusting  ;)... ;D
Keep an eye on it & check the oil level in the diff & top up if necassary  :)

The uneven tyre wear may simply be down to the tracking being out, but also could be wishbone bushes worn or track rod inner ball joints worn  :)
Vibration could be unbalanced, unevenly worn or faulty tyre/s, especially if it only does it when hitting a certain speed  ;)

P.S. Not sure if you know, but the colour you have is Mid Atlantic Blue (same as mine)....just incase you need to get a touch-up stick from Ford  ;)

BlueQ.
An apt handle for this grand car!It looks a tad low on the front, could have weak springs,or toe out causing tyre wear. The A/C person should fit a new cabin filter which could be causing the odour,if the coolant level remains constant when cold, there wont be a leak,as jonnycab implies dont be too concerned about the diff
dampness.
                 Happy Scorpin GOZZ
