Title: scorpioless for a week!
Post by scorpio_man on Jun 16th, 2008, 3:51pm
hi there

for all those at harewood house meeting who helped me with my 'problem', an update....

copper pipe blew off 1/2 way along the a66! stopped and let it cool down a bit. re-fitted the pipe, filled it back up and off i went.

got to just short of penrith and all was not well again! did the now usual thing of stopping, cooling and filling up.

now up to gretna services. it now has a hissy fit and spits very hot chocolate milkshake at me!:o gallons and gallons of the stuff! ???

let it cool and filled it up. still running ok, so off i go.

managed to get home, car still running (28.5 mpg @ 70mph!), but all not well. :( all the pipes are showing signs of high pressure, so take the cap off. again i have the chocolate milkshake. head gasket failure signs, so it's off to be repaired. cost is £500! it took a lot of soul searching to ok the repair. :)

i like to give a big thanks to all that helped me, especially mike (simmo) and trevor (wumps).

cheers
andrew

OH dear what a shame . Sorry to hear that Andrew but glad that you did actually make it back to home though . may be worth considering breakdown insurance for the future though!
;)

Funnily enough, somebody did comment after you'd left that they'd be passing you on the A66   :-/

Still, once you've dealt with the timing chains, it should be relatively straightforward if you decide to do it yourself; though I'd be concerned whether your "previously repaired" thermostat housing would cope with being removed and refitted.  Might be an idea to see if anyone is breaking a 2.3 Galaxy...

Well it nearly worked, sorry to hear about the extra grief Andrew. Got to say the the estate was really looking handsome on Sunday anyway. Hoping that this does ultimately work out OK!

Glad you got back OK Andrew and sorry we never had much time for a chat....apart from your issues, I was unaware you were scooting off early. Maybe we can have a natter next year!!

Good old Wumpster (Trev) always seems to have a parts department in his boot. It is a joy to watch him rebuild an interior or engine from bits in his car at some meeting or other!!

Nice one Trev!

hi there

i'm back!!! well, i never went away, but the car did. :( it was off the road for 2 months.

ended up having to put a s/h engine in.

list of things as follows...
head gasket
then new head
then s/h engine

not the prettiest of re-builds. i'll tidy it up at some point, but at least i'm back on the road.

big thanks to everyone that's help me out over the last 2 months (biggest shout out is to my sister in law for giving me a loan of her galaxy).

the cost makes pete's lpg saloon look a complete bargin (not that it's not).

i will say never again. >:(

Yessss!!! ;D.  Andrew that is great news and total dedication to the cause.  It seems ages, as indeed it is, since Harewood and all that plastic and sludge!!. The very best of luck. You sure as hell deserve it. Mike. ;)

Andrew,

I now have the same dilemma, Rad split on way back from hols, but also got signs that a head gasket may have gone.

Just put it up on parts wanted in case anybody has a head set for a 12 valve.

Once upon a time Baz probably had half a dozen rads standing by for his 24 valve, not heard of any 24valve rad swelling recently  ;D

Looks like the 12 valve may be prone to it as well.

Oh no Geoff.... I still have a few spare rads in the garage. S29 is laid up at the moment with a busted hose and the spare car has a blocked cat and keeps blowing the EGR pipe off so I am in the wifes Migrane Cabriolet!
