Title: Is it just me?
Post by Geeker on Jun 26th, 2008, 6:43pm
If I ever attempt to edit my profile page or view mine or another members last 10 posts, the page just times out or more-often-than-not, it just never loads at all ::)

Can someone tell me if this is unusual please, or does it happen to all members?  ???

Time out shouldn't happen but altering your profile does take time to load . I know as so many people click the wrong button when they do it and delete themselves and I spend a long time putting them back on again !

Be careful, PLEASE

I find that the whole site can be be rather slow at times to load pages.  But then again it hosted in the USA.
Thought I read once that there was talk of transferring across to a faster server  ???

With regard the last ten posts it always tended to be slow but more often than not now I get "The page cannot be displayed"
Just timed it trying to open your last posts & after 5 mins it went to "The page cannot be displayed"

I don't have a problem with the main site loading, but as soon as I go into the Forums then sometimes it's like having dial-up again  :-/

I did check my firewall settings & they're fine, then thought it may be down to the fact that I'm still on AO-HELL, but most other sites seem to load okay  :-/

So is it actually the site that runs really slow sometimes ?

Jon, I certainly find the site slow from time to time. Seems quite random. Mike :)

I think the answer may lay in the time frame over which  posts were made. I have just tried to get the last 10 posts for 'Geeker' but got fed up after 4 minutes. What I don't know of course is when the first of those 10 posts was entered...could be months ago in which case the search would be massive. On the other hand to compare I asked for the last 5 of my own posts and the answer was provided within 30seconds...BUT...they were all in the last 4 days.  ???

UPDATE. and now to shoot that theory out of the water  }{ I tried to obtain the last 10 posts of the Forum, which of course must be recent, and the machine gave up after 5 minutes. I got the 'Internet explorer can't display the page' message. So looks like it is an issue for the 'The Big Boss'.  ;)

The last 10 posts of mine were all made in the last 3 days.

Hi Guys

Here's the situation :)

The software that we use does not use a database but each post exists as a seperate file - so anything that requires the server to trawl through all the posts takes a long time, often to the point where the server or your browser just gives up. It's like having thousands of small files on your computer and wading through them.

There are new software packages for forums that we could use now (remember that this site was created in 2000 - 8 years ago) BUT it would be a nightmare technically and most users would get confused and thus upset if we changed the way that the forum worked.

The good news is that I have the new sooper dooper server available and I'm negotiating with my Network Data Center on a deal to connect it to a fast connection - it needs to be on a 100mbps connection which is horribly expensive but I think I may get it plugged in there on the back of another deal that I'm working on.

As soon as I do then I can move everything off the steam powered server on to the fast one which will improve matters no end.

So please bear with me :)

Steve
