Title: That plastic manifold
Post by Tompion on Nov 16th, 2008, 4:23pm
Back in June 5stud was kind enough to send me an old 2.3 manifold so that I could adapt it to use an inline stat housing. I bought a Rover housing quite cheaply off Ebay. It is also plastic but I think the problem is in the design of the Scorpio one rather than it being plastic.

I made up the adapter from some brass sheet etc I had kicking around & silver soldered it together. I used some graphited gasket sheet to make a gasket and used hylomar jointing paste.

It had to share one of the bolts, I cut the steel spacer & top lug of the manifold down by the thickness of the brass sheet & gasket to form a lap joint.

I expect it cost more in time than if I’d bought a new one, but just fancied having a go :)

Wow !!......that's impressive  8)

I remember talking to you about it at the Kent meet a while back & I couldn't see how you were going to do it, but you obviously knew better than me  ;)

Well done  :)..........don't suppose you could do one for me as well  ;D

Blimey Dave,
nice job - looking forward to seeing your handywork at the Badgers meet.

You planning on replacing/upgrading any more bits?  :)

Cheers

Paul

Tompion.
Top notch job that, full marks ! How about producing a thermostat housing for the 24valve into which could be fitted a standard thermostat.I can envisage such a thing, but have not yet found time to give it attention.

;D ;D
If I had the means to make quick job of it I would, but it’s pretty much hand-file & hand-saw work with a bit of lathe work & drilling thrown in - so fairly time consuming.

Does your manifold still have those 2 studs & nuts fitted? The PDF shows them as being on a diagonal at the ends but mine were next to the middle ports at the bottom. Either way I can’t see why they didn’t use bolts for all six fixings, there are 2 steady pins so it’s not for locating the manifold.

No Paul, nothing in the pipeline, I expect I’ll have things to replace as MOT time in the next few weeks……… although I had been thinking about that matrix ::)

I think if I owned a 24v I would’ve tried to alter the stat housing.

Yea, mine still has them & they are in the same place as yours & that's where they've always been.

I've always wondered why they weren't bolts as well, as you still have to remove the studs to get the manifold off & back on. Maybe the factory fitters weren't quite as skilled as us lot  ;) & they were for steadying the manifold along with the pins & the manifold was actually fitted before the engine bay was filled with clutter. That's the only way I can see that you could actually get it to slide over the studs  :-/....... :)

Now that is what I call a work of art  8)

Almost a shame to hide it - perhaps a hole in the bonnet with some perspex  ;D

hi there

someone on the mailing list has just done this using a 12v pump, etc.

i'll post more info when i get it (will get it put on the main site later).

In general appearance the only difference between the 12 and 24valve pumps is the angle of the inlet pipe, which in itself would not be insurmountable.I assume that the castings of both blocks is similar, therefore one would assume that both pumps would bolt on .

hi there

does anyone have photos of the 12v AND 24v water pumps? both front and back shots.

if so, can you email them to me.

thanks

I've never tried it Gozz but from what I've heard on here they dont fit each other, there is a slight difference in the bolt hole spacing

I've got a 24v one here too, will give them both a clean tomorrow and picture both together.

I can draw round them both too on a bit of paper and compare the outlines and mark the holes, will that help?

I can see the square hole on the back of the 12v pump that needs closed off but I cant see he reason for drilling the extra (Blue) hole, the holes all line up ??

I think he’s saying in addition to using the spare hole you need to drill another hole to hold the plate on but you need to be careful where it goes.

Dear Tompion,

My scorpio 2.3 suffers the same "plastic manifold" problem.
I hope to build the same parts as you posted 11/16/08.
I plan to make the copper joint first then remove the inlet manifold because to make this joint needs a long time.

If you remember the size of the joint especially the distance between the two tapped holes?
