Title: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by lesterlad on Nov 23rd, 2009, 6:57pm Took the ole girl for MOT today and it was initially a fail on n/s rear wheel bearing. (excessive play) Tester rang me, asked me if I wanted to sort it or the garage, I asked how much, he said if just adjustment free of charge, so i says, even if it needs a new bearing just do it. Anyways, adjustment sorted it, so Ive got 13 mths under me belt. Whooo hooo. ;D Fast Idle test...................................................Pass Engine speed.........................................Not checked CO Level................................................0.15% Pass HC Level................................................13ppm Pass Lambda..................................................1.01 Pass Natural Idle test................................................Pass Engine speed..........................................Not checked CO level.................................................0.21% Pass Advisory...... Both outer sills slightly corroded. ( these two points are about the size of a 10p piece ) |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by Tons_of_fun on Nov 23rd, 2009, 7:47pm Nice one Rod. Made up for you. Always nice when you get a result like that. Whats the betting i'll break the run of luck come January ::) ::) |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by lleewar on Nov 23rd, 2009, 8:05pm Well done Rod. I have already broken the run on luck. Mine failed on the 18th on emissions and missing bolts on the rear caliper. The latter has been sorted as it was dangerous and I am waiting for delivery of a cat to sort out the emissions problem. Hopefully that will sort it on the retest |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by gozz on Nov 23rd, 2009, 8:33pm Rodders. Wheel bearings on scorps are not adjustable, they are preset and the rears are torqued to 200lb/ft.Keep your eye on it mate!! GOZZ. |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by lesterlad on Nov 23rd, 2009, 9:04pm Gozz. When I say "adjusted" I suppose I should have said "tightened" I must admit tho when he said himself "keep your eye on it" I was a little concerned. I might just go buy a new bearing and get it fitted to be on the safe side. (if their still available) |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by gozz on Nov 23rd, 2009, 10:50pm You can get em from the factors, the problem is that once they have run loose the hub is nacked, and in advanced stages the carrier as well.Cheery old sod aint I :( See you soon GOZZ. |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by Snoopy on Nov 24th, 2009, 6:54am Ignore it at your peril... Believe me when we say get a new one fitted ASAP... It is NOT difficult to do and should take about an hour if all goes well . The kits are the same as the granda, so they are still available, from MOST good motor factors. The wafer nut is also from FMD for a couple of beer tokens ALWAYS fit a new one and make sure you use thread lock on the NUT ( strong) variety. REMEMBER the scorpio bearing nuts are not Left and right handed. they are both normal so the nearside always has a tendency to undo!.................Hence the thread lock . |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by Simmo on Nov 24th, 2009, 7:54am AND... still re-check it after a couple of hundred miles to make sure it is still torqued up to 200ft/lbs. This is way beyond the range of normal DIY wrenches. |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by Dave2302 on Nov 24th, 2009, 2:11pm [] It's basically a good breaker bar (Snap - On) or similair, with about 4ft scaffold pole on the end and jump on it. F.T. in other words ;) |

Thanks for the advice gents. Had a new one fitted today by the garage, good job I did as well, The old one was not far off being devoid of "dirty coloured"(brown) grease, there were signs of slight water ingress which I assume came through the seal. There was no pitting or score marks on the hub (phew) Got to take it back end of Nov for a check on the torque.(free) Bearing kit including wafer nut .........£49.95 Labour..............£35.00 |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by Malcolm73 on Nov 24th, 2009, 7:23pm My 24v Ultima has covered about 86, 000 miles and nowadays I cover less than 6.000 miles per annum. Overall the car is in excellent condition and at the moment the bodywork is being brought up to showroom condition by the best man I could find. As a precaution would it be sensible to replace the rear wheel bearings? 73’s Malcolm |

Title: Re: MOT Pass with Advisory Post by gozz on Nov 24th, 2009, 8:18pm Not necessarily, they don't all give trouble.Make sure the nuts are torqued up,then jack up and grasp top and bottom rocking to test for wear, turn the wheels and feel for roughness, you can't spin em because of the diff and possibility of pads dragging, however you can jack the back complete, put it in gear and run it listening for grinding or hum, bear in mind though that the pinion bearings are sometimes noisy and the sound can be transmitted down the driveshafts. GOZZ. |
