"OSR handbrake insufficient effort" in fact none
other side plenty , no problem.

Sounds like a stuck handbrake lever on the top rear of the caliper?

Did it pass the brake test ok? just no handbrake effort?

You can see the lever in situ in pics 3 and 6 (connected to handbrake cable)

Both these pics show the rear of the caliper on the left

I have in the past managed to free them with WD40 and knocking them back and forward (gently) with a hammer although there is a rubber seal at the top of the lever shaft.

Worth a shot, even if just to get a pass for now ;D

It sounds like its stuck in the OFF position Tony

ie. towards the rear of the car, if you take the wheel off you should be able to see whats happening (I suspect nothing) while applying the handbrake (or have a beautiful assistant do it while you watch)

When its working, the cable should pull the lever forward and the spring return it when released

hi there

it's a bad design from ford. the mondeo is the same. if it's not the caliper then it's the cables on it (mondeo)!

as stuart says, try some wd40 or get a refurb caliper.

I will give it the WD40 treatment tomorrow.

Is it likely / unlikely to be the cable , if it is are these readily available. I would think probably not?

Cables still readily available.

The handbrake cable runs from caliper to caliper then is pulled tight in the middle by an equalizer yoke, so very unlikely to be the cable or I would expect neither handbrake to work.

picture 3 shows the underside of the handbrake lever (top left) connected to the yoke and you can see the NS handbrake cable (top right) the cable passes round the yoke and goes to the OS

If you look at the second link which Stuart put up (reply 4) you will see the handbrake lever mechanism. It is usually this which seizes and can sometimes be freed as stated. You can also undo the securing bolt SLIGHTLY in order to allow the linkage to be raised a little and knocked down again. If you remove the bolt totally it is a job to get it back in place because of the spring strength. In any event you cannot withdraw the whole shaft as it is held in place by the small 'peg' which is shown alongside. It sits in the hole at the bottom of the shaft and locates in the end of the coarse threaded screw also shown. Each time the handbrake is used it activates the threaded rod and thus pushes the piston. As the piston is threaded it thus takes up any pad wear as well. The shaft is protected by a seal at the top so it takes time and effort to get WD past it. You can see where the seal sits in the photos. Lifting the lever and using WD sometimes is just enough to get things working again. :)

I've had mine undone a couple of times and would suggest perhaps one and a half turns. :)
