Title: Scary journey.
Post by lleewar on Apr 17th, 2011, 4:02pm
Here's one I'd never thought would happen to anyone. Whilst driving down the A12 yesterday at 70 on cruise, there was, in a flash, a loud bang and the sudden realisation that I could not see where I was going. The bonnet had thrown itself up, broke the bonnet dampers and smashed against the windsreen. Hard breaking and steering through the side window, I brought the car to a halt. Luckily, there was no-one directly behind me or overtaking me otherwise the outcome could have been different!! Outcome, smashed windscreen, bonnet bent in every which way but loose and a dented roof in the aerial area and two people who feel very lucky to be breathing still :)!!! Funny thing is I have not had the bonnet up in weeks and I've done the same journey on the A12 with no problems and at the same speeds. New screen to be fitted on wednesday with a 75 quid excess >:(, could do without that!! Bonnet to find. Anyone heard of this happening to anyone else, not just the scorpio?  Lucky Lee

Glad to hear you escaped unscathed, could have been nasty.

I recall my uncle had this happen to him many years ago in a Rover P6 although don't think the windscreen was damaged, just the bonnet buckled.

Thanks Mike. Just  bonnet damage would have been "nice", but with the screen and roof, more expense than I wanted to bear :(.   Lee

Yes that happened to me in the 70s when driving someone elses Volvo 164,I had to repair it even though the safety catch was rusted open through lack of maintenance and care.

Happened to me with an old Morris van.   Bonnet came clean-off, busted the screen, and went over the top and hit a post-office van behind.

Rod, yes I still have the bonnet I got from you, but I was hoping to get a state blue one so as not to go to the unwanted expense of spraying ;).
Stuart, possibly the catch was slightly open and the safety catch not sitting properly on the grill. Only noticed the later after the accident, it had been strapped up with ties ??? Have replaced from my old car.   Lee
