Title: New member, owner of a Cosworth Ultima
Post by Erich_Honecker on Jan 26th, 2013, 8:35pm
Hello!

I purchased an early 24v scorpio cosworth ultima last year, prior to purchase I researched the forums here and with that experience to hand, I believe I got a good buy at auction.

My father had various mk3 granada/scorpios over the years, took delivery of one of the 1st 2.9 colognes in silver on a D plate in 1987, hence my interest in these fine cars.

My more recent ultima has a few minor faults, but the wiring seems ok.

#1 The front grill has a broken bonnet release cable, the battery is totally dead and will only start with a heavy duty jump pack, jumping from another running vehicle is no good, I've noted the forum posts advice on this. I hope to pick up a good 2nd hand battery tomorrow aswell as some facelift lights and front grill from a breaker.

#2 The radio code is missing but I believe I can sort this by removing the walnut effect trim next to it and getting a code from there for reference.

#3 Speedo is stuck under the support bar at 0mph, hopefully a good battery and hitting of the dash will fix this

#4 The cologne/cosworth engine is super smooth and can barely be heard at idle. It seemed pretty quick but maybe lacking a bit at top end, maybe a maf clean will help. Gearbox seemed to shift well.

It is a pretty normal car, only nice extra that I believe is fitted is a rare factory twin exit silencer single pipe each side.

A few pictures, low quality

Welcome along Erich you have joined a fantastic forum.
I'm sure there will be lots of advice given, to make ownership that much easier.
I recently had a stuck speedo needle, bashing the dash didn't work, but it went back of its own accord after a couple of weeks. Hopefully yours will do the same.
I look forward to seeing any pictures, and am particularly interested in the exhaust you have. Not heard of a factory-fit twin tail pipe one before - some photos would be good if you ever work out how to load them.

Heya

Welcome to the forum

you say it seems a bit flat at top end? how so? they are limited in 4th to a lower rev band to save the auto box, even so you should be going well into 130.

Exhaust will be an aftermarket one. ive got all accessory info books and option material, a twin exhaust is not mentioned in any. Can you tell what material its made of? (steel or stainless)

Jeff, thanks for the welcome.

I have edited the first post to include some pictures. Yes, I hope the speedometer fixes itself!

Matt, thanks for the welcome.

It seemed not to pull so well at high speed, maybe my expectations were a little high. It pulls of the mark well, plenty of torque.

Regarding the exhaust, I believe it is made of steel, the tailpipes have a little surface rust inside, nothing serious. Its so quiet and its appearance gave the impression it is a factory item, but I am happily corrected.

Please see added picture above.

I don't think the Scorpio is as rapid as the Escorts and Sierras were

I'll do a quick check list tomorrow for you to check regarding the top end

its an after market exhaust but they almost match the tail pipes to the standard unit. Ive got a similar system on mine only bigger tips and no rear silencer so it howls a bit :D

Nice looking car, my first cossie was silver, my eagle eye see's you are missing the dust cap off the A/C charge point, id recommend fitting one (any ford cap will fit)

Agreed vs sierra & escort cosworths, however the scorpio does perform well, considering its size and weight, I think a tune up will make things right.

Thanks for the information on the exhaust, it was a nice surprise when I went to pick up the vehicle as the vendor only advertised a picture of the front.

I will get a cap for the AC charge point tomorrow at the breakers, thanks for that, would not have picked that problem up, thankfully it has a battery cover and what I believe is a fuse box on the left top side of the engine bay seems dry. Passenger footwell dry also.

One other fault is the auto rear view mirror is broken and sitting in the glovebox, a cheap stickon mirror is fixed in its place. Will see if the breakers have one but I suppose thats unlikely.

Look forward to the top end performance advice, will be a little while before I test it out as I'd like to do a bit of work on it.

I fitted a auto dip mirror from a bmw to my scorp when the original one  leaked. You will need the mount from the screen from the bmw, works well as it had the right wires.

Thanks for the tip, nice one. Which BMW model & year did you use the mirror from?

The breaker guy hasn't called me today as arranged so it looks like I won't get my bits and pieces :(

Edit, I now have 1 facelift headlight, new grill and battery, anyone have an offside front facelift lamp available?

Hi Eric and welcome to the best of the best for scorpios. Nice motor looking at the piccies. Let me know what parts you need. I have a front grill for you and I'm not that far away. Ask on here for parts, you will be sure to get them most of the time. A working donolley rear view mirror is the hardest part to get. Let me know. Cheers Lee

Thanks Lee. I need an offside facelift front lamp and possibly a facelift grill with a light blue surround to match the car. I looked at your profile, essex is just a short trip down the a13 for me,.

The grill I picked up today for £5 is an early one but it has a working bonnet cable and has not been cut in the middle to access the bonnet catch like the one currently on the car.

Yo Matt

Thanks for the list.

No idea on service history, took a punt and bought on condition.
Oil clean, no smoke or rattles from a cold, just a nice smooth cologne purr.

Acquired a super cheap 2nd hand excide battery in almost new appearance with square terminals today, tested on charger before purchase as good. I hope to hook this up on Tuesday and test some of those items. I've got an obd2 code reader so will see if I can link it up and check for any codes.

I'll do a basic service in due course too, got a few motors to take care of, trying to keep costs down but not be too tight, cosworth is worthy of some cash
:)

Update

I may sell this cosworth, if you're interested let me know! Please send any offers via pm, they need to be fairly strong. Happy for an admin to move this to for sale section if needed.

I have the log book in my name. 118k on clock, no mot or tax right now, but may get it through mot. Reason for sale is due to pending redevelopment of land it is being stored on.

I fitted an excide battery last week, started up no problem first time. Battery cover and firewall all back in place.

Air con pump was noisey, may just need a bit of driving about to sort. With ac off, no noise.

No other faults really apart from speedo stuck under bar. Bit of rust on arches and bubling on nearside rear door but nothing major, please see pictures. Got a new early grill with bonnet cable and one facelift headlight ready to fit.

Car has premium michelin pilot primacy tyres on front, good tread, premium pirelli p6000s on the back. Twin exhaust, full leather, two fobs, red key, led key, also normal ford keys. Cd changer in boot missing caddy, stereo needs code but has faceplate.

Alloys in nice condition very few marks. Brakes seem good too, handbrake fine. Engine and autobox sweet, no wiring gremlins that I have come across

Please see new pictures, have videos of the cosworth/cologne puring sweetly but hosting site freezing when trying to upload, will try and post them shortly
