Hi Tony,

Not sure if I'll get another, with Simmo's help I'm trying to get hold of Fred as I've seen Fred's car before - but I expect it's already gone.

Hi Tony,

Yes insured not that I'll get much, got the details from the police after they'd spoken to him.

He said a BMW did a U turn in front of him & he swerved to avoid it & hit my car.

Tell them its a " Classic car " and you want it restoring back to its previous condition.
It is NOT YOUR insurance company that is footing the bill it MUST be the other party.
I wish you well in your quest.

Whats the speed limit on that road? It takes a hell of an impact to cause that much damage

This!

A third party insurer CANNOT* write your car off and they are obliged to restore you and your assets to thier original condition prior to the other parties negligence.

I did this with my old Sierra - worth £1000, third party insurer paid £2500 to have it repaired.

You might have to fight it though - get the ombudsman phone numbers ready.

*The only exception is if the engineer/assessor states it would be dangerous to repair and return to the road (as yours might be as it looks like it migh have significant chassis damage) which in that case find the best condition, most expensive Scorpio on Auto Trader/Ebay/this site as an example of what it would cost to give you an equivalent car (bearing in mind it's a facelift by the looks of it).

I agree - and push it up onto the pavement!

Dave's just down the road from me. Because the road is long you wouldn't (or would you) believe the speed some get up to - mainly boy racers. There's a blind spot on a bend a little way from me where a few speeding motorcyclists have been killed as they hit cars emerging from a side street.

Hope we see Dave back in another Scorp soon.

Cheers Paul, thanks for the call earlier.

Zoomed in a bit you can see creases on the roof & by the ns quarter light & how well the rear doors now fit.

Ooops there was another one that has gone and that one looks like it needs a new engine.

I recognise that road you were parked on lol.

I saw that one on ebay but I'm not keen to buy from there unless the car's nearby.

The batteries were flat on my camera so didn’t get any pictures of the other car a Vauxhall Corsa. It was where my car had been parked but a bit out from the kerb and facing the centre of the road. I didn’t look that closely at it, front smashed, front nearside wheel hanging out. Strangely part the way round the steel rear wheel the bead the tyre sits behind had been flattened out up the side of the tyre presumably lost a fight with the kerb.

Id say that been hit at 50+

Looking at the zoom pic the rear subframe must be destroyed as both rear arches appear to be sat on the tyres.

No chance of getting that straightened up.

Yes I think you’re right, the wheels did come down a bit when put into neutral but pretty sure not much was where it ought to be.

Any decent crash investigator should be able to assess the speed at the time of impact by looking at this and the other car. Personally I think the 'excuse' is a load of ......... (You choose!) and I bet Matt is not far out.  :(

Looking at the damage to your Scorpio, its hard to believe a Corsa could have done that and the occupants survive !
Reckon the story of swerving to avoid a Beemer doing a U-turn is looking a bit far fetched IMHO - more like someone driving way too fast and just lost control. Can the police get an idea of the impact speed from the amount of damage ?
I'd wager it looks like significantly more than a 30mph impact :o
Don't think even Wayne from Devon would be able to do anything with your car now.

He gave one away & got grief from the new owner & appears to be keeping the other as he was talking about changing the wishbones.

You're right, I gave one away and got grief, and I'll be holding onto Movvy for a while yet intending to do the wishbones before next MOT.   Really sorry to hear about this, I agree that the impact suggests much higher speed, if you knew exactly where the car was parked, and exactly how much it moved including rotation, and the model of Corsa, I'll tell you what the impact speed was, or very close!   Especially if you can tell me how much fuel was in yours and the Corsa.

There’s a challenge Peter :) I can't be exact but I can roughly work out the Scorpio from the 16” sq offset paving slabs in the picture as I park in much the same place (with wheels fairly tight to the kerb if that matters) but the Corsa would just be from memory.
The Scorpio in park moved approx 20ft & rotated anticlockwise approx 34 degrees, about 3 gallons in the tank.

Checking the reg online it says Vauxhall Corsa Hatchback (06 on) 1.2i 16V Club 3d.
My memory is that it was just short of 90 say 80 degrees clockwise rotation and the back NS wheel was within a few feet of where the front NS wheel was at impact (assuming front left hitting rear right). No idea of petrol, 2 people in it.

Hi Mike, Thanks for asking - we are both well.    Paul.

Hey Dave

A very 'scratchy' estimate, but really it's quite an exact science and without measurements to within 3-4 inches, and precise conditions I can only guess.

I weighed my Scorp yesterday, and just as the book suggests I had about 90% fuel in it.   The base model without any extras is quoted at 1680kg, mine weighed in at 1810kg.   Mine has a tow-bar on it so I figured with that and the fact yours had a lot less fuel I'd base the calculation on your Scorp being 1740kg.   The model of Corsa was a bit more difficult because I know no-one with that model to weigh it.   Also there was a model change that year, but the newer model is only slightly lighter.   The mean of those two models is 1080kg, and I put two people in it and added 135kg that brought it to 1215kg, so I then added a bit of fuel and took it to 1250kg.

So what we have is a force of 1250kg, on a dry road hitting a stationary force of 1740kg.   (By 'stationary' I'm thinking of a rock-solid force, so your car is in 'Park')   The sationary force moves 20ft.   (for the purpose of ease I didn't take the rotation into account, but I changed the distance to 6250mm, which is about 20ft 6ins this makes my calculation easier)

I got between 46mph and 52mph.   Best I can do.   Still couldn't put my hand up to it though.   No-help I know.   I'm very surprised the Corsa wasn't completely minced, but if the guy hit your car with a corner of his, or your 'parking-pawl' let-go so your car rolled, did you have the hand-brake set?    There are are lot of things to take into consideration.   I would be erring on the lower side of that speed just because of the lack of damage to the Corsa.

Peter

Bit late to chip in now, but sory to see this. I'm off the radar these days as I'm working in Delhi for a while, but back occasionally.
Still got my red Scorp, but not looking to sell it, I'm afraid, not yet, anyway, so hello Paul if you check back, it's going well. Had a rear wheel bearing replaced, and HID nudged the front bumper and the paint has cracked.
I love it, but miss the Cosworth power of my previous Scorps.
Good luck Tompion, hope you get some recompense, but don't think you'll get that fixed. Heart breaking, isn't it.

I have just read this post Dave, and I am so sorry to see what has happened mate. I really do hope you can source a top notch replacement. And there is a lot of good advice for you in this post.

It's just a crying shame
