Title: Happy Easter
Post by Torbayboy on Mar 29th, 2018, 7:11am
Just crawling out of the woodwork (comfy leather Scorpio seat actually) to wish all a Happy Easter and much good Scorpioing (?) this spring.
With the snow gone its time to show a clean back end (perhaps I could have phrased that better) to all in lesser cars!
Anybody rescuing any Scorps lately as many are scrapped on Flea bay?
Possible to come to Paignton sea front in july  for the Torbay old wheels show??
Roy

Even old Volvo's have wiring problems:

Sorry to hear that Dave. Knowing you it will all go back together perfectly!
Good luck.

Cheers Mike,

I'm in no rush, I'll just do a bit each day.
Pulled it all into the passenger footwell today.
I might do the matrix while I'm at it ::)

Very interesting link that - please view it!
I wonder how many Scorpio "dissers" are Volvo owners?
 Karma is a great thing!

Had the car running today with its renovated engine bay loom. Can't take it for a drive yet as dash removed ready for new matrix but problems appear to be sorted :)

Hi Dave,
glad you've sorted out the issues. What were they?

Hi Paul,

The problems changed over time. It started around last November with the OD light flashing.

Some of the problems that developed were:
Lumpy tickover due to EGR valve opening
Engine not starting until I briefly disconnect the battery
Cooling fans staying on with engine off

Spraying the engine bay loom with corrosion block cured it for a while but problems came back.

It would get really lumpy at low speed & struggle to get away if you stopped for more than a second or two - similar to a failing coilpack. Disconnecting the battery would sort it until the PCM relearned its (wrong) values.

It would tickover fine when cold but get lumpy as it got up to temperature. Diagnostics showed the throttle position about 25% instead of the normal 16.9%. As the engine got hot the PCM for no obvious reason was being told the engine was under heavy load (at tickover) so the injectors were over fuelling (it stank of petrol) presumably the oxygen sensor was trying to control the over fuelling by putting the short term fuel trim well into negative about -28% but it was flatlining.

I’d already fitted brand new autobox & engine looms a while back so the engine bay loom seemed the most likely problem, although I did take the slightly easier route & strip both fuseboxes first just in case but they were fine::)

Unwrapping the engine bay loom revealed typical corroded & bare wires down the passenger/exhaust side of the bay so the only option was to rewire it.

Looks like a fine job! much too scary for me, can you make looms up for others who struggle with these things as many Scorpios are lost with bad wiring?

Keep up the good work.

Great (and brave) work Dave. Looking like looms/wiring could  become more of an issue with age (of cars).
