Had a good all round run to Devon for a show at the weekend, it gave me the opportunity to get more familiar with the car in all sorts of different conditions over 400 miles or so, tiny lanes, big hills, dual carriageways, tailbacks and it coped well with all of them. The boot took loads of stuff and it achieved 29 mpg.
It did reveal or confirm a few things that will need attention but nothing major I think, so it has achieved the main objective I had of owning a classic that could cope with long journeys on fast roads.
Using the different modes of the gearbox was interesting, I used Sport on some of the ascents but overall I found switching off the overdrive was the most useful on long hilly stretches.
Was pleased to meet up with Roy and his wife at the show. There was lots of interest in the car at the show and only one negative comment that I heard. One chap reckoned he had worked for the supplying dealer (he thinks it was from Hartwells) and another said he saw one new in Reed of Torbay just after he had paid the same money for a little house.

Hello all, it was nice to meet up with a fellow member, and in a lovely setting with good weather to boot, and show off the excellent car he has.

Much bigger car show than envisaged and I think Quentin was impressed also with the turn out and the amount of people showing interest not just in the best car there(of course i would say that 'cos I'm biased) but generally the standard of cars was very good and the variety excellent.

Perhaps some of the local scorpioers will be at the Torabay show this coming sunday on Paignton green, can't put the car in as it's not pre '92 (which means a G word car can be there but our better ones cannot) will enquire at the show why! as my M reg is now 24 3/4 years old now and IMHO that's good enough.

NB must have been a tiny house in 1998 for £20 grand, been better buying an estate version and living in that!

I've never found any need to turn off OD on my 2.3 or the one I had previously except to provide a bit of engine braking in 30 zones on slightly downhill roads.
If yours hasn't been used a lot or just short journeys over the years it may still be a bit choked up. Mine had only been used for holidays by the previous owner and not covered a lot of miles by the owner before that (unlike the first owner who did 50,000 in the first year).
It was gutless when I got it & took quite a few weeks before it ran as it should. A couple of tankfulls with redex seemed to help.

Unless you have the fixed mats make sure the floormat hasn't crept under the throttle pedal otherwise kickdown may not work - the "switch" is a dummy - kickdown works electronically at a certain throttle angle which a mat may prevent it reaching.

Thanks for the tips, yes it was indeed the long downhill stretches that I mainly switched off o/d, where I was behind queues of traffic and didn't want to be constantly on the brakes. The uphill exception was Telegraph Hill which is a Monster and I wanted to pass lorries safely.
It can be a bit languid in E but kickdown or Sport is fine when needed.

Out for another event tonight, Hayling Island Legends midweek meet and barbecue, varied selection of vehicles and late models welcome.
