Title: Long Time, no visit
Post by Baz on Feb 22nd, 2020, 11:14pm
Hi everyone.... just thought I'd pop in and see how everyone is doing these days.... nice to see that the site is still running along

I've just spent a while looking at some of the posts, and so many new members from when this place first started all those years ago.... sadly my last Scorpio (S2.9COS) went a long time ago, and needs dictated a larger car...

Looking back at some of the very early posts from meetings we had at Derby, Weston, Harewood etc. prompted me to look up some of the old photos... how young we all were!! ;D

Not many of the old names still posting by the looks of things, but as someone said on a post, the Scorpio is now a favourite with the banger lads and good, low mileage cars are very rare... my last facelift Cosworth Scorpio, when I bought it, had less than 20,000 on the clock as I recall

I now run round in a MK1 Granada as my classic and since losing my last Scorpio, I have replaced it with the only car I could find that was as comfortable and well equipped (but nowhere near as much fun to drive); the S Class Mercedes... I'm on my 7th since the Scorpio but still miss the old Cosworth...

Take care everyone, and now I've found my login details again, I'll try and keep coming if you'll have me :)

Baz

Welcome Baz, there are a few of us left but as you say many of the old familiar names have gone.
Snoopy rarely comes 'out of his lair' but keeps a watching brief over his cornflakes! ;D
I've had my 2.0ltr estate now for 21 years but sadly it looks as though it may have to go soon. Tompion has kept it going for years but right now wiring issues mean I can't use it.
Hope you are well, can't believe you are on your seventh Merc. I take it you stay away from Paris!!? ;D
Mike.

Hi Simmo.... yes it is sad that the members today don't get to do what we did!! but at least the site is still here

Paris was a trial I admit.... but spawned the love of the S Class when the Scorpio failed back in 2006.....

I still hear about the Steve, the chap who used to make all the add on mods for the Scorpio (Light extender, auto roof close etc) as he works with my mate at Jaguar Land Rover in Liverpool and occasionally speak to Geoff W and speak on Facebook. Anne Griffin (Richards wife) pops up on my facebook occasionally, and Danny R is has lived in the US since the early 2000's contacts me too sometimes... as for the rest.... not in touch with anyone else :(

Well contrary to what Simmo states I am still here and keeping an eye on things. Nice to hear from you again Baz. I don't have much contact with people from the site very much. I do however get messages from Thailand from the people that drove the scorpio out to there. I think we had the best days of these cars but I am sure that one or two will remain as classics for years to come.
I still miss my scorpio and find it hard to get a car anywhere near as comfortable to sit in and drive being such a small chap.
Stay in contact Baz .

Sorry to buck the thread but it's nice to see the owners of the Scorpio when it was a much newer more expensive car posting on here again.
As a "newbie" I caught the Scorpio bug as the price decreased somewhat, and must confess as r 747 eae sat on the drive I thought the usual BUT it far exceeded my expectations in many ways having had the mk3 granny (which was a comfy car also) the improvements were vast.

Having gone through a fair few now trying to find a nice "keeper" I am surrounded by estates of the marque, as many have said you won't find a better, more useful, comfortable car anywhere.

I know my situation is unusual and many have to have a specific car for work etc, but the praise is always there for the Scorpio and no one seems to go back to them having (sadly) parted with it.

There are still good cars out there but with the exception of nunnspoet no one seems to get them back and on the road from this site and I find this hard to understand.

Many of my "mates" have said "you could have a "nice" car (generally mentiioning the berlin motor group thingy!) for what you have spent on Scorpios", trouble is they don't understand once you're with a Scorpio things are different I would rather do low mileage in my cars if that was all I could afford rather than 1000s of mies in one of their modern computer driven  (driver hill start rain lights park assit) heaps & most are now uglier then the Scorpio they critisise, I mean for the pleasure of playing on the dual carriageways in a wolf in sheeps clothing such as a cossie is hard to beat in this humdrum world of mass produced rubbish.

Hopefully a few more feel the way I do and more will be saved, though I have too many presently and 2 have to go soon, both nice cars one well know on here from the old m**cjn days and the other a nice 2.3 estate facelift.... perhaps make someone happy few bits to do and both low miles...

I wish you all well, sorry if I'm a bit blunt, it's just nice to have some more life on here and helping to keep our lovely cars alive

:) ;) ;D  :o 8)-still a child!!

I see the mention of the Harewood rallies, my ex-car (Charcoal Green 2.3 Ultima) had a plaque from there mid-2000s. At that point it might have been wearing its personalised plate R33 something. It's MoT comes up soon so fingers crossed but it really should be fine. I missed it at the weekend when I took my Other Classic for a 150 mile round trip, lot more tiring than the Scorpio was inevitably.
This forum and the cars themselves do remind me of the 75/ZT forum. Lots of the members on there like me had their cars from new or nearly and hung on to them for years. The cars were - are - very comfortable but complex with some maddening repetitive issues, and now they are old and worth very little. The Scorpio was on my short list in 1998 but the list price was too high and mid-to-high 30s mpg for the hard-to-find diesel wasn't good enough when I was doing over 30,000 a year.

Quentin, was yours R3 EUR at one point?

I still have all my old Harewood Plaques from the shows we did... I think at one point, we had over 60 Scorpios on the field there... amazing turnout!!

I don't have the paperwork for the car any more because I moved it on to Bill when he bought it, but I am pretty sure it began R33 and reflected the initials of the owner from Scarborough way.
60 is amazing, there is still a gathering of them and Mk3s which was well attended last year, unfortunately I didn't have advance notice.

Hello All

I do look in here regularly, if only really for the nostalgia!   I still have my Three Jaguars, Two X300's (one LWB) and my 1957 XK140.   I shan't mention the Jaguar site that I'm a member of, and how USELESS the members are, in case anyone knows someone on the site!   But the aforementioned site is mainly full of 'Chappies' that collect their 'Jag-waars' and get someone else to look-after one's car!   Ho ho.    Sometimes there is some useful info, and there are one or two real people that look after their own cars, but nothing like on here.   Still, neither of the big Jaguars can compete for the comfort of the Scorpio, the LWB car comes close because it's a 'Sovereign' but then even with new suspension it's 'squidgy' compared to the Scorpio, because it has 'Comfort' suspension.   I was going to fit a set of Scorpio front seats into my LWB, but instead I have decided to fit them into the '57 XK140!   And will fit all the electrics into the car as well!   I got the seats from a Belgian car that had only 50k Klicks on the clock.    Cost me 200 euros from a Ford dealer, and in lovely condition.

The XK140 in nowhere near completion, I seem to be more busy than ever now I'm retired, people keep asking me to fiddle-about with their cars!   A dying trade up here.   I've finished the body, and it's long been converted to RHD.   I have an also retired work colleague that was a cabinet-making Lecturer doing a new dash from Brazilian-Walnut.   I have finished the 4.2 Mk10 Engine, and 'Bench-Run' it with Triple 2 inch SU's, and Triple-Webers, I'll stick to the SU's!   I've sourced a nearly new ZF Auto-Gearbox, and serviced it.   I'm assured that it will mate to the 70's 4.2 Engine, and have seen one in place, but will need to make a driveplate for it.
I still have a lot of spares, some new, and some very good second-hand.   I'll need to list them here and see if anyone wants them for a reasonable price.   I need to think about this, perhaps I should list the items, and look for bids, and donate half the money to the site?   After-all, I'm never going to use the stuff.   I have a brand new 12 spoke wheel, never been against a hub, as can easily be seen, has a fair tyre fitted.   I'll easily post stuff to people, but I'd rather it didn't ultimately cost me money.   I'm open to suggestions?   Or, I could box the whole lot up, and send it to one of the admin peeps at their cost, and they could sell it off for site/club funds, and when it's all gone, send me a Scorpio plaque, how about that?   I'll list the stuff soon.   I don't even know if the remaining members are interested in the stuff? Anyway, I'll pop in soon, as usual.
Kind regards to all, Peter

Hi Peter... good to see you are still around... I found all my old Harewood plaques last week while tidying the study... all my Scorpio parts are long gone sadly, but I still have all of the brochures I collected at the time,.... another tidying up find :)
